Getting started
What is mcda.Studio?
A web application for GIS-based multi-criteria decision analysis. It guides the user through nine steps, from the study area and the criteria to weighting, results, sensitivity analysis and export.
Who can use the application?
The application is open to researchers, practitioners and students. An account is required to create and save projects.
Is the application free of charge?
Use of the application is free of charge. Storage per account is limited; additional storage can be requested from the administrators.
Is GIS software required?
No. All steps run in the browser and the calculations are carried out on the server. GIS software is only needed to prepare input data and to process exported results.
Data
Which data formats are accepted?
Raster data as GeoTIFF or ASCII grid, vector data as zipped shapefile, GeoPackage or GeoJSON, and tables as CSV.
Is there a file size limit?
Each uploaded file can be up to 500 MB. The total storage available per account is limited.
Which coordinate system is used?
All input layers are aligned to the reference grid of the project, which is defined in step 1 together with its coordinate reference system. Layers in other coordinate systems are reprojected to the reference grid.
Who can see the uploaded data?
Projects are private by default. Input data are visible to other users only when a project is shared, and the download of input data is locked by default.
Sharing and teaching
Can a project be shared?
Yes. Projects can be shared with other users as editors or viewers, and results can be published through a read-only public link.
Can the application be used in teaching?
Yes. A project can serve as a template for a course, and each student works on a separate copy.
Results
What does the result represent?
A classified map that ranks the locations within the study area from very low to very high. The result is relative and does not represent absolute values.
How are the results documented?
Each analysis can be exported as a report in PDF or Word format that records the data, weights, scoring functions and assumptions, together with the result maps in GIS formats.
How should mcda.Studio be cited?
mcda.Studio does not have a DOI yet. Until then, the citation given under “Cite mcda.Studio” at the bottom of each page can be used.
